He attended primary school in Qunu where he got given the name Nelson, he then moved on to Clarke Bury Boarding Institute which was a secondary school of decent quality. He studied there until he finished his junior certificate so he could move on to greater opportunities. Not long after getting his certificate Nelson started studying for his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University College of Fort Hare but was not able to finish it because he got expelled for participating in a protest.

Later Education |
In 1941 he and his cousin escaped to Johannesburg to dodge being forced go into an arranged marriage. He then started studying for an LLB at the University of the Witwatersrand, by his own will he was a poor student and decided to leave from the university in 1952 without graduating. It wasn't until after his imprisonment when he started studying through the university of London but did not end up finishing that degree. It wasn't until 1989 during his last few months in prison when Nelson obtained an LLB by the university of South Africa.
